Hoods Up!

Next time you are taking a long trip to grandmother's house or any other family trip, be sure to give your vehicle a quick and easy driveway inspection along with the normal periodic vehicle maintenance checks.

Here's a driveway inspection check you can give your vehicle that takes only a few minutes.

UNDER THE HOOD

Check the antifreeze level. Newer vehicles have the see-through reservoirs with level markings. Top off with a 50/50 solution of antifreeze and water. Be careful to never remove the pressure cap when the engine is hot!

Inspect the belts and hoses. The belts should not be frayed or cracked, and the hoses should not be bulging or worn.

Check the windshield washer fluid and top off if needed.

Check the transmission fluid with the engine warm and running, and the parking brake on.

Check the power steering fluid to be sure that it isn't low.

Check the oil for a proper level.

Check the air filter and have it replaced if it's dirty.

Check the battery to be sure that the cables are attached securely and that they are free of corrosion.

Check the brake fluid. Have the correct fluid added if needed and check the possible leaks.

AROUND THE CAR

Inspect the windshield wiper blades and have them replaced if they are worn or brittle. Wiper blades should be replaced at least once a year with bad weather.

Be sure all the lights are working, including the brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers. They should also be kept clean.

Keep the tires inflated to the recommended pressure. Check for cuts, bulges and excessive tread wear.

Taking a few minutes to do this inspection could save you some headaches on the road.

Be sure to do this check at least a week or two in advance of a trip so that, if maintenance is needed, you'll have time to get to your garage to have the appropriate items repaired.
